A steward is an individual who acts as mediator and go between for their fellow workers. A  steward must have tact, patience, and a sense of fairness if they are to perform their duties successfully.

An enlightened management will welcome the presence of an informed steward as a means of avoiding the acrimony that can poison the work environment.
